Well, I finally did it. I switched from the standard Virginia DMV plates to Antique Vehicle plates. The cost is a one-time $13.50 fee and the plates never expire and there's no more state inspections. The main stipulation is that the car should only be driven for pleasure - ok by me!

The plates are heavy gauge steel but they only had screw mount holes on the top, so I had to drill holes on the bottoms to get them mounted right. I was going to forget about the front plates and put my USA-1 plate there instead, but then I figured the cops would probably not like that. The plates are ugly too - Big white numbers on a black background.

I'm not sure what to think, this was my driver car for 9 years and I've taken it from New Mexico to the east coast. It's been through the desert in August to Las Vegas and it's never broken down on me. I hope it's not pissed for officially being labeled 'old'!

does this mean the car cannot be a daily driver? as in used for transportation to and from work?

Don't feel bad, I have Classic Tags on my 85 Caprice. The insurace break makes it all worth it. I just can't let it show more than 5,000 miles between inspections. Insurance cost me $270 a year and I'm 18 so yours should be less than half of that.

i was going to put classic tags on my '65 Buick Skylark,but I drive it all the time, and didn't feel like having it done

A friend of mine, he must be about 60, told me has collecter car insurance on his 63 chevy that cost him $90 a year, full coverage and unlimited miles.

I used to know some guys that used there cars in a business that mounted speedometers under tha dash so they didn't roll up all those miles on the cars odometer.

Yep, it is not supposed to be used as a commuter car and it is also supposed to stay within 250 miles of your residence. I don't know how the cops would enforce the daily commuter thing.

There's nothing that says it can't be used for a daily cruise to the store to buy beer,milk,bread, smokes whatever.

I have a '03 Tahoe Z71, so the long trips, beach trips and commuting to work are done in it. Besides, it gets better gas mileage!

My insurance was very, very low - no wrecks, claims, violations for over 20 years. But when my teenagers became of driving age, it went up like you wouldn't believe!

Do you mean acutal old plates that you got from a swap meet or regular plates that say "antique vehicle" on them.
Here in Oregon you can use old plates but the DMV really gets you for the price, they consider those "custom" plates

I have have Haggerty classic car insurance on my elcamino http://www.hagerty.com/, it's modified so it's a little exra (came with a 6 cyl). something like 119 bucks a year for 8,000 replacement value. I've never had anyone inspect my mileage. Never heard of one with unlimited miles. Can you find out the name please ??

I got antique tags on my 71 chevelle. The only real difference that i notice is that i dont ever have to buy them again. I can driv eit as much as i want and still have to take stupid inspection sticker test things.

here you can either get "antique vehicle" plates, just regular plates with a AQ on them or Special Interest plates "SP" but are supposed to only go to shows or parades, club functions, etc. I know someone that got pulled over & asked where they were going & the cop CALLED to see if there was actually a show there.. nice huh ? Only good thing is that pre '75 vehicles don't have to be smogged here

in mass you can use year of manufacture plates, which means i can use mass. plates from 1966 for my car. you can drive it like any other car as long as you have the proper insurance.

Hey, if you are getting a rate that only allows you to drive to special functions, you are commiting fraud if you use it other times.

I pay extra to use my vehicles for my business. What ever happened to being honest instead of just trying to screw anyone you can.
