John Force was quoted as saying,"In his 33 years of racing he's never heard of a spectator being killed in this manner". It's clear in the video that the wheel was coming off well before the 330ft mark, and nothing would have stopped it. Only NHRA and the tech department will know what the exact failure was.
It's a sad day but anything can happen no matter what safeguards are put in place. |

I worked the event, but not on Sunday when this happened. A friend who was there where it happened said she got a look at the wheel and that all the studs were sheared. Like John, I have never seen wheel studs shear off in all my 52 years of being around a drag strip.
I'm going down Thursday to start teching for the Division 7 event, so if the Matco car is in impound, I might get to take a look at it. If so, I'll report what I see. Richard. Last edited by techinspector1; 02-24-2010 at 01:35 AM. |

Hell, Dan Wilkerson lost BOTH his rear wheels (sheared studs) last October at Memphis, at about the 330'- plenty fast enough by then to have killed a few spectators, had things gone badly. See image below.
I think they chalked his accident up to improperly torqued fasteners- likely as not Antron's problem as well.

The tire and wheel hit the trailer next to a friend of mine. He said the side door of the trailer was caved in.
From what he saw at the scene , the lady was dead shortly after the tire hit her
