Any advice on getting a softer smoother ride?
I have a 1980 Firebird that I've been slowly fixing up. It's coming along good I swapped a new engine Trans and rear end into it and it runs like a champ. But the suspension on this thing is basically all original and wore out. So far I've just put bolt on subframe connectors on it it has air shocks in the back. I do have big Mickey Thompson sportsmans in the back which may contribute to the rough ride. I live in Ohio and we have pretty rough roads and this thing just rides so hard it feels like it's going the break apart when I hit even the smallest bumps in the road.

Any things I can do to make it ride softer through the city? Any specific bushings I should go after or suspension parts to upgrade?

First off, those Firebirds and Camaros with rear leaf springs always rode rough on the rear, Novas too.....Plus, the air shocks just make it worse.

I would replace the airshocks with good quality gas shocks. Also, take the rear springs apart, cleaning up all the built up rust in them, put them back together with grease or teflon strips between them. If you can get away with it, take a leaf or two out....that will soften it, but handling will likely be affected

Any advice on getting a softer ride?
I have leafs all the way around on a '32 Chevy. At spring rebuild time I bought teflon tape designed to lay between each leaf. The spring shop liked the idea and we did it. I'm happy with the results. It is an iten available from all of the After Market vendors. Talk to your favotite vendor and ask thenm to get you whatever length (mine came in a roll) and then cut it to length. Remember to leave an accomodation for the center bolt. It even eliminated the spring noise I used to have.

If you want the car to handle the ride needs to be firm on that car.If you dont care how it drives, first take off the sway bars or use smaller ones and softer springs,or better, but a luxury car and drive the sports car on week ends.
If you want it to handle better, put on heavier sway bars and bilstein shocks( or equals)
