Any Gen III gurus?

I've been told that when swapping the cams in the Gen III V8s you don't need to pull the lifters. All that needs to be done is back off the rocker arms and rotate the engine through two revolutions. I guess doing this will lift all of the lifters into a retainer and hold them up enough to remove the cam? Is this true? I found a Comp Cam that should work nicely in my truck and not pulling the lifters would make the job a little quicker and easier since the intake wouldn't have to be removed.
