I used a combination of chem dip and carb cleaner when I rebuilt my Holley. Soaked the parts overnight and then used the carb cleaner to get all of the dip off of them; the solvent combined with the high pressure from the can does a good job of getting rid of the gunk that the dip loosened up, especially in all of the little passage ways. Followed afterward by compressed air.
And it's funny how those little passages just happen to turn around in the housing and come straight at your face sometimes... A little bit in the eyes won't do any permanent damage, but wow, does it sting!
