Any way to tell what year and model an engine was taken from?

I just bought an older model volvo 265 wagon that at one time had a bad engine in it. It was swapped out to a Chevy Vortec 4.3 and 700R4 transmission. The problem is that I do not know what vehicle the engine came from should I ever need to order parts. Is there any way to identify the year and model that the engine came from ?? Its fuel injected... 1996+ i believe, but not totally sure.

Casting number on block and on cylinder head under valve cover will get you close.

CPI's started in 1994(it was a transition yr along with 1995)which could have either a CPI or TBI.The weird yrs was OBD I or OBD II and in 1995 a mixture of both.I think you would still find some numbers in front of the passenger side head on the deck as long as it wasn't decked. Those numbers will give you a build date, what month, where built.Google those numbers. My chart is at the shop.
