These guys are no BS, no off topic stuff and are everything you'd expect from a bunch of bikers who live motorcycles.

The Horse

http://www.network54.com/Forum/47850/

Some really good fabricators and techs hang out there, and most seem to be from that end of the country...

You'll need to register with network 54 first, I don't know what all that will bring you...I didn't notice any greater amount of spam from registering.

The main focus is HD, and other V twin, but as alot of old school choppers were english bikes they talk about that stuff too.

I don't know of any HD forum that has the same friendly atmosphere like goes on around here. I don't get around much though.

If you use the search function on their site, select search by "match", instead of "date"...Date seems to always return me to the start.

Later, mikey

don't feel bad wierdbeard, i've had both sportsters and full size harleys and for the type of riding i do (around town, errands, short trips-like under 200 miles each way) i actually prefer the sportster. i also use my bike almost everyday all year around, if you have saddlebags, a short sissybar and some bungies you can pack a lot of stuff.

here is the hot setup: i got this from a V&H tech i know and it works:
1-forget the screaming eagle stuff, go with buell racing stuff.
2-first you are going to incease displacement to 1200, order 2 buell 16871-99Y barrels-they bolt right on to the 883.
3-order 2 buell 22676-98Y high compression piston and ring sets.
4-order 1 each buell high flow racing head-front 16797-98Y -rear 16827-98YB, these are the thunder heads.
5-a set of andrews cams, as i recall they are the #2 set but i don't have the part number handy.
6-crane dual-fire ignition and coil package, don't remember the part #.
7-carb jets , i had to go up 2 sizes on the low speed jet and ended up with a 200 main jet (165-170 is stock and yes there is such a thing as a 200 main jet, most people dont know it and it has to be special ordered.
the nice thing is all these parts can be ordered at your local HD dealer and some are a little cheaper than the screaming eagle crap.

MODS:
1-get rid of all the smog crap, look around the frame under the front of the rear swingarm.
2-take a hole saw and swiss cheese the plastic air cleaner base on the outside of the filter-this is a major breathing restriction.
3-remove the baffels from inside the exhaust pipes-this is a major breathing restriction. it won't be that loud under normal driving conditions because the engine has so much power you hardly have to give it any throttle.
4-polish the combustion chambers and piston tops, a smoother surface has less area to absorb heat and will resist detonation, the pistons have a CR way north of 10-1.
5-rejet carb and go with spark plugs 1 step colder than what a 1200 cc would take.

cliffnotes-
don't forget to bolt the front head support to the head first, the head is so big you won't get it on after installing the head (ask me how i know--> )
the 883s are actually geared lower than the 1200s so this helps acceleration even more.
under normal driving conditions you probably won't move the throttle more than about 1/8 inch. that took some getting used to-you don't actually move the throttle to go faster, you just think about it-->
buy a GOOD battery, you'll need it.
i did mine at 20,000 about 4 years ago and am approaching 35,000 and it has been totally reliable and runs like the day i started it and i have enough power to beat everything except a few BIG INCH S&S motors.
have fun and hang on....

Funny you mention S&S Cycle. They had their original plant within 40 minutes of where I grew up. Had a nice plant tour about 15 years back, lots of cool stuff to drool over.

In a while, Chet.

It's too bad that S&S is making crappy parts now too...2 years ago I bought a set of brand new S&S heads from a friend who has been an S&S dealer since the 70's...He ordered them from the factory.

They lasted about 2 weeks before they burnt both exhaust valves. Upon inspection I found the margins and seats were ground so thin at the factory that the edges burnt back...S&S told me that they would take them back for a warrantee, but it would take 8-10 weeks and they would inspect and repair as a warrantee at their discretion, and if they felt it was my fault, I'd be sent a bill for the repair. My friend said they rarely find themselves at fault.

I took them to the local guy ...300.00 dollar valve job added to a set of two week old 1100.00 set of heads.

I know the valves weren't too tight...mine is a kick only, solid lifter bike, they don't start at all if the valves are too tight.

I'll bet it was a cool tour though...

later, mikey

Sportsters are considered GIRLS bikes around here ...

I had a couple Sportsters in my life ... I bought my first one ( a 1957 ) in 1964. Bought another one ( 1970 ) in 1970. In 1971 I bought one of the first SuperGlides ... ( white ) and have never went back to Sportsters.

The white Deuce HD above is actually my second Deuce HD ... I had a Concord Purple 2001 ... bought new in Dec 2000. Rode it 3700 miles in 6 months and then had a heart attack. Sold it ... could not ride it ... but I finally got better 3 years later, then I bought my 2004 Deuce and only have 4200 miles on it total ... slowed down a good bit.

This site is for two wheel fun ...
