i have one of there 383's so far i like the engine. i am having a problem with the carb. its a road demon. the road demon isnt the right carb for my engine but its the one i wanted. on the dyno the demon ran just fine in fact it made 10 more hp over another carb. on the dyno though like most true dyno shops they dont start from idle and goto WOT. they loaded it up they slowly let it wind up from 2500 or so. so on the dyno the carb ran ok but in my truck with 308 gears, 33" tires and an automatic it isnt the right carb.

loyd at t&l has been working with since i got the carb. he sent me a new holley carb on friday. These are the carbs they prefer to use on there engines. so with all the help he has been giving me i think they are a stand up company in my book.

the engine makes lots of power once it hits 1500 rpm. it will break the tire loose at around 2000 rpm. so to be its make some torque to spin 33"s like that.
i have ran it up to 3,800 but i let off because i dont want to hurt my trans. i have a date next week to put in a stage two shift kit for it so i can romp on it. i just hope my 10 bolt rear will hold now lol. i am not trying to says its the most powerfull 383 out there but it puts a smile on my face lol i am not a street racer but at the stop light some times i like to beat them to the net one.

anyway give them a call and talk to them to see what you think.

BEWARE! T and L Engine Development

I recently had dealings with T and L engine development and I want to tell everyone out there BEWARE!! I ran across one of their ads on eBay for a Chevrolet 408 stroker engine and after talking to them over the phone I decided to buy it. (Big Mistake) This was back in April 08 keep in mind. So I paid them the $3700.00 down payment they required in good faith that I was dealing with a reputable business. They turned out to be the most unprofessional shop I've ever done business with. I was told to expect a wait of 8 to 10 weeks for delivery. I patiently waited for the first 4 or 5 months with the idea in my head that ,o well it'll be worth the wait. I started thinking something was wrong around the 6th month when I started trying to call them and the secretary kept giving me excuse after excuse on why I was unable to talk to Lloyd the owner. So after leaving my phone number a half a dozen times I got a little angry so she let me start talking to some guy named Rob who gave me more B>S runaround lines than you would ever believe. He told me they were almost done with my engine probably 6 times. He said it had already been mocked up and was in assembly (FOR 2 months!). He told me B>S like It sure is a pretty bright red color! Finally after 8 months I just asked them to please refund my money and Id just make them a bad memory. Rob instructed me that they dont normally give refunds. So now 9 months later, I still have no engine, my project is still on hold while I have the pleasure of disputing my payment to T and L through my credit card company. If you are thinking of having these guys build you an engine, Id strongly discourage it.

I've thought many times about buying a crate engine on ebay and for some reason I just can't find the courage to do it. In my mind for such a major purchase there is something to be said about looking the builder in the eye and shaking his hand. Maybe even being able to hover in the background while the engine is being put together or at least run in.
There must be a reputable machine shop/ builder within a reasonable distance that we could have an engine built for those of us too scared to try it ourselves. I include myself as one not confident enough in my ability at twisting a wrench to even try it.
I will get my first taste of building in the next few weeks as I will have an opportunity to help a friend build 2 engines for his stock car. This should be quite an experience and I hope to gain enough knowledge to start my own build before spring, with some help of course.
Long story short, as always, buyer beware!!!!

Assembling an engine isn't hard at all. If you have all of your tools and parts on hand there is no reason you couldn't do it in a weekend. I think the record is something like 14 minutes...

BTW I couldn't find the video of the fastest engine build, but I found on old one of an engine swap in a ford escort.

rebuilding a motor is easy just let the pros due what you dont have the tools for (machine work) if you have good shop check and go through all the parts
putting it together is easy
take your time in a clean area use lots of lube
do alittle home work and dont stress

I`d be contacting Evilbay if thats who your friend got it from. Being it`s been this long I would be more than just concerned I would have already taken action.

Try doing a search on T & L engine development. They've been discussed on this forum and others before. And the reviews I've read have been mixed. Here's a negative review from a thread on this forum back in 2006 that sounds a little like your buddy's situation:

On the other hand, other people have been entirely happy with them. Others have been happy with the engine once they finally got it.

I've merged this thread with another thread on the same builder in case anyone is wondering why it suddenly looks different.

beware

my friend still has not recived his motor and they have not answered the phone or e mails for the last 8 days. when they talked last week they said they were to far along to refund his money, really how long could it possibly take to build a motor? looks like he will have to make a road trip to go get his money back since there is no way to contact them. how can someone stay in buisness treating customers like this??

Another good reason to support your local machine shop.

A lot of good info from all. After a number of phone calls with Lloyd and lots of questions, I went ahead and ordered a Chevy 383 from T & L and yes it took much longer than Lloyd stated initially. I received the engine almost 9 months after I ordered it. I didn't care since I wasn't ready for it when I placed the order. One thing you need to consider is the reason for the delay, demand for the T&L engines is high. I guess that speaks to the quality too.

I have yet to see any statements about the quality of their work only complaints about delays in delivery.

I was concerned about the delay in receiving the engine but I never had a problem contacting them either via phone or e-mail. Lloyd may have not been available but he always returned my call the next day. His daughter Holley was also very helpful.

I also worked a deal with Lloyd that the warranty would start the day I started the motor. So far a year later I haven't started the motor but Lloyd is standing behind the original deal.

Moral to the story is if you are in a hurry to receive your crate motor, get it locally.

I opted for the fuel injected version and can't wait to hear it run.
