I agree with the OP.

I can't stand large rims with thin sidewalls. It just looks like "bling" bolted to the hubs.

I didn't like the idea of using huge 17" rims on the rod project but they're the only thing that clear my brakes. They're also not deep dish either so I'm half way to what I can't stand.

Does that make me a semi-hypocrite?

You might say that. Or you could say you're a pragmatist.

i think the original post was asking if we thought 22's and 24's looked "wrong" on classic muscle cars. my vote is "they don't look right". i don't think the original post was meant to bash anyone with giant rims wrapped with rubber bands. it's not a good look for the stuff i like. i also don't like to see a 71 cuda tubbed. just because i don't like what somebody likes doesn't make it personal.
the modern challengers look good with 20's as long as there is a bit of side wall there.

Ok, all i'm trying to say here is:

i would like to know why all the animosity and segregation towards other "groups."

For example the "tuner" crowd. Yes, alot of what "tuners" do baffles me. Subconsciously i might think they are barking up the wrong tree and are misguided---to put it nicely.

But so what? They aren't hurting anyone with anything they do.

Same with the donk crowd. Admitedly some of them look good. But in alot of other cases i'm perplexed.

Maybe it is my competitive nature that makes me feel this way?

Alot of people may not understand what i do----For instance for the street i would want to go from v-8 to 6, not the other way around. Yet maybe run aftermarket mags and a nice paint job because i like the clean look. Some people may chastise that.

So, I would like to know, if you are the type that openly (or even closedly) criticizes other car "subgroups" why do you think you do this? I am not judging anyone here----i would just like to know more about human psychology and i think understanding and possibly changing towards positivity may be the best thing.

Do you do it because possibly like me you have a competitve nature. Or are you somewhat negative? Imaturity? Fear of something different?

oh, the psychology.
compare it to birds. the male with the brightest feathers that builds the best nest gets the most tang.
sound similar to anything?
donks and tuners are younger males with shiny feathers. on a psychological level they are competing for the available tail.
personally, i just think donks look stupid and tuners got short changed in the cylinder department.
keep in mind that there are only a handful of cars built after 1972 that i will show any real respect. it's just a matter of what people like.
also donks and tuners make me think "thugs". i'm sure when i was young and running around in my stuff back then people my age thought the same thing about me.
now when people see me (or hear me) in one of my old rides they probably think "mid-life crisis". it's human nature to group people.

The Chevelle looks nice from a Distance, it is Orange with white stripes but when you get close you see the big 20 inch rims the guy has one it and I believe the car is juiced too! The Camaro also looks nice from a distance, black but it is sitting on 22s and I know this one is juiced!
My Dad thinks I am weird that it bothers me as do his friends. But it bothers me that these cars were meant to be driven and raced not thrown on 22s and trailed around to car shows. (The Chevelle gets trailed, the owner never drives it).
The weird part is I don't live in the Ghetto either, I live in a gated Subdivision.
Anyone else get bothered by this or should I just leave it as everyone has their own tastes?
well I will say this, each to their own, but I personally like 15s and fat~wide tires...Im 53 so thats probably why .LOL Tell me something, why is there practically no white lettered tires around ?? do you remember the old goodyear racing tires that only had goodyear on one side of the tire, not the newer eagle tires??I like the way they looked at speed , looks good ! I agree with you on the dubs, MY S10 has 15 inch weld wheels that duplicate the centerline draglites...these are the originals because they have the very thick hubs..I'v wanted these every since I was 14..NOW I finally got them..I even have a set of the old slotted mags that are 14 by 8 with uni~lugs..I always thought the polished slots were cool !! on the subject of one sided white letters, I took flat black tire paint and painted half of the letters on the tires I got from pep boys..so what if no one else likes it. I did it to please me !! sorry for rambling on, got nothing else to do,recuperating from a 3rd surgery on ankle .LOL happy cruisin !!

Big wheels look good only if they are done right
Like this is a huge no! You look like an idiot

Yet these are 20s (18s on the front) and look outstanding:

If you want a lifted vehicle, buy a truck.

Dont really care what people do, but would like to know why they are called "Donks"?

Is it because donkeys (jackarse) drive them?

Donks are traditionally 71-76 Impalas, the nickname comes from the Impala Emblem which is equated with a donkey.

Boxes are 77-90 Impalas and Caprices.

Bubbles are the later model Caprices with the rounded body lines.

I know who does like them. The wheel and tire companies. One good pot hole and you need new rims and tires. Don't believe me ask your local wheel and tire guy. They have no sidewall cushioning so the tire and rim get destroyed easily and they cost a lot. I like my ol' school cragars. Muscle cars like bigger sidewalls so they can hook up better and makes for a softer ride. As others have said it's their nickle. I think it looks like a hot wheels car or a foosemobile and don't really like it myself.
