Anyone graft '40 chevy headlights to '39

I got my '40 chevy headlights in, and the buckets of course don't fit perfect.
With it straight on the fender (back and front touching and can be welded) the sides have about a 1" - 1 1/2" gap.

Has anyone done this modification?

I am going to tack the front, and the back then weld in material. However, if someone has done something else by cutting the fender I would like to know.

I will try to get some pics up tomorrow.

I started to do exactually what you are trying to do, except I was going to use 40 P/U buckets, I trimed out the bucket sides untill they fit the contour of the fender,, but before I got much further, I decided to make fiberglass pods and use 37 ford lenses, with them frenched in,, [see picture] I have the mold to do this if you are interested, but the 40 buckets would look good also,, if you cut them down ,, they don't stick up on the fender so high,, you would be making a big bucket on top of the fender if you add 11/2 inch to the sides, [just my 02] Bill

[QUOTE=Beenaway2long]Bill,
Did you extend the hood?[/QUOte

BEEN AWAY,,,, Sorry about the slow reply Yes I did extend the hood,, I first shortened it in the rear , by 3 1/2 inchs because I wanted to lay the grill back,, then I streched the front BEAK? [point] by 1 inch to create the pointed front, 39 hoods have a blunt nose that I didn't really like, the grill is laid back about 2" , I was planning on putting a blown small block in it and the blower scoop stuck out of the hood ,, so I need to figure out some way to make the hood raise up in the rear to clear the scoop, but customers cars came first so it got put on the back burner,, now the car has been moved from the back burner to the back garage, out of site out of mind ,, so to speak, the car is basicly just the way the picture shows now, to many projects,, I thought about selling it but projects are hard to sell and I would really like to see the car finished, anyone interested???
The top has been chopped,, actually the front and back windows were laid back 2 1/2 " [windshield] back glass leaned forward 2 1/2 " so the glass stayed the origional size. but the top is lowered by 3 " the square back look of the top was taken out by slicing the top behind the quarter windows,

Later Bill

I am also considering a shortened hood. What did you intend to do for a grill?

I was going to make one from stainless bar stock, I have made grills for a few other cars and its not really that hard to do, with a little patience,
If you shorten the hood to much to lean the grill back, you will also have to modify the fenders a little or make the grill a little different ,, I chose to go with the grill change,, the car just went into limbo before I got to it, If you work on other peoples cars you know what I mean,, you don't have time for your own projects,
Are you working on a 39 also? Bill

Update on the '40 buckets to '39 fenders. They actually fit and look good. They took the curve of the fender (I will get pics up).

Rod-
Lets see pics !!

Bill-
I'm chopping mine in November. I decided I want to do a 3" front/2" rearchop. Saw 5 of them this past weekend at the Syracuse Nationals (7,000+ cars). No one seemed to hit it right except 1 guy. He did a 4"/4-1/2" . A little low, but nice profile. There were probably TWELVE 38/39 chevy 2 dr sedans there. I couldn't believe it. I want a rake in the hood, as well as the roof line. Along with stance, I think it would be killer! Theres tons of pics in my Project Journal.

Jeff
