Looks like one of the console mounted tachs from the early 60s..They usually had Pontiac, Buick etc on the face though......Is there a mounting lug or bolt hole on the bottom to mount it to something?
I just asked him to send me photos of it's mounting. I haven't seen it in person. It's very odd not to have a name on it. But there were a few very early muscle cars where they put one under the dash that had no name. But this looks late sixties to us.
Pontiac used this style of hood tach and Chris Craft boats also used them on top of the dash:
Back in the day, J.C. Whitney, Bargain Barn/City, Yankee Stores, PAW, PAM, etc. all sold generic tachs for like $14.95... but those usually go to 8,000 RPMs... 6,000 RPM tachs are common on boats with gasoline engines... but they usually mount in the dash... also in 1950's/early 1960's cars...
.
I remember back in the day one of the car magazines claiming they shifted the last solid lifter new GTO they were testing at 6800 on the drag strip... but sometimes they got 'ringer' cars to test... My '65 GTO with Tri-Power engine started pumping up the hydraulic lifters by about 5300 RPMs... although that S-cam prolly would have pulled higher with better valve springs... the tach was redlined at 5300...
You are correct with the 6500 ,I was thinking the DZ302 Camaro and the L79 327 and L88 Corvettes had 6700,,but the redline started at 6500 and maxed at 6700.
Photos ,,Base and HP versions,,my memory is failing ,what next.
Never seen the stock tach for an L88 "430 HP" 427"... but they usually dyno 560 HP @ 6600 RPMs with open headers... so maybe you just ignored any redline on the tach and used the last number showing as a guide... Just like you ignore the HP rating...
About the same HP as a SBC 400 crate engine at 5900 RPMs:
I think it might be newew than the 50s,appears to have curved glass an more modern printing of numbers,, I had a 67 GTX back in the late 80s or early 90s that had on that looked very similar but had it mounted on console (bad location ) but it was factory,,Possible the face rotates to mount it in any position,
nevermind, i'm about three pages off the post i was replying to. D'Oh!
