Colt 45

I worked with Joe Davis of the Davis and Ingram race team. They were running a fiat altered , then put a 65 mustang skin over it, and fiberglass parts as soon as they were available. Lots of Info on the Hamb site. and Joe's later T bucket altered Jewel T which held 4 world records at the same time.

Very cool, I don't remember it at all. It was basically a digger with a long body, very cool!

Those front wheels are most likely spindle mount wheels with motorcycle tires mounted..That was the deal back in the day before Garlits mounted the little wheels and tires he used..

I saw the Phony Pony run! I think it was at the AHRA track, here in Tucson, in the early or mid seventies. Quite memorable! :-)

How memorable was it, did you like it? On draglist they said a lot of spectators didn't like it.

I have always been drawn to the unique things, rather than the "typical" things, so I personally liked it. Because of my business, I have learned that there is a line you can cross that starts to turn people away. The farther you cross... the more people who reject that idea!

It was enough of a departure from the usual combinations that I questioned "why" they chose to add the body? ...maybe to make an existing car eligible for Funny Car match racing??? Who knows? ...but it IS memorable, despite the fact it was not known for stacking up victories!

That reminds me of one of those "high points" in my career as a rabid fan!

Some time in the late seventies, or early eighties, Ivo had bought back the Show boat... which had been converted to the Wagon Master. He had it here in Tucson at the drag strip. I was in the staging lanes, and got a chance to talk to Tommy. I told him I had seen him run it at Indy in the very early sixties. I was surprised that despite his fame and wealth, he was a very humble and likable guy! I was impressed by that, and will always think of him that way. :-)

Showboat/Wagon Master is such an awesome car, Its good to hear that guys like Tommy are down to Earth guys. I honestly don't think I ever met an pro drag racers before. Just a friend of my dad met the late Al Hofmann who he said was a very humble guy.
