Just a thought.

I got the wrong one before so I just cut another groove into it.
But if you don't know its the wrong one, things won't be quite so simple.

when i first got my truck, i was doin some p/m on it an i ended up getting my cap on dizzy bout 45* off and got the same problems as OP is having, crank crank cranck but no start... that was a lesson learned as the cap an sit 2-3 ways on the dizzy and make ya contacts for each cyclinder out of whack... id suggest turning cap one click left or right and resnap the hooks and try again as thats what happened to me once i took my cap loose to make sure my advance was working.

If you want to be 100% sure, take off the valve cover and check that both valves on #1 are closed at TDC.

when your at tdc on number 1 both your rocker arms will be up..turn your engine by hand a you will get a good idea on full cycle..also put your finger over spark plug hole and wait tell you feel air pushing passed your finger then wait tell your roker arms both come up..check your mark on balancer

i did that, just now i had helper crank engine, air came out 1# and i hand cranked it the rest of the way.while doing so, i was watching the valves up and down, on the 1# cylinder they never seemed to both be all the way up at the same time?? one would go up then come down but not all the way down and both would stay somewhat in the middle. never did i see them both up which i would assume is closed.

The arm where it contacts the valve tip , both should be at the highest position , not one up ,one down.
Valves are closed when the valve tip is up. The spring pushes it up closed.

thats what i was saying, i know they had a higher point then where they are sitting on the timing mark. one would go up all the way up but i didnt see both of them go up as high as one along would go up at the same time. and doesnt the spring push the valve open?
