AOD Questions

Up until the time I built my 32 ford coupe with 302 / c4 combo, I was never much of a Fordahaulic, but Im getting there. My latest question is about installing some sort of overdrive tranny. Im thinking AOD, but just need some understanding on what it will take to make one work, and someone to recommend a year model of transmission to use. The 302 in the car came from an 82 Lincoln, if that makes a difference. Do I need any electronics gizmos? How about lock up TQs vs non lock up? Anyone know about what flexplate to use? Crosley, I know you know this stuff. What do you think?

If you have the C4 now, to make the AOD work, you would need to have a tranny crossmember fabricated about 1" - 1 1/2" further down the tunnel because of the bigger tail shaft. The C4 mount can be used for the AOD. You probably need to shorten the driveshaft the same distance.
You also need a TV cable for use as a kickdiown as the c4 uses a vacuum, the AOD does not and is attached directly to the carb at the throttle location. LOKAR has these for you. No electronics involved.
87-93 out of any ford will work. 90-93 has beefier internals though.
The shifter is tough, depending on what you are running. Floor, column. cable...etc

in looking for any AOD from an early unit to the early 90's vehicle.... there is an electrical connector/switch near the shift arm of the tranny ( drivers side) this is a neutral / back up light switch)..

IF you find an AOD with a larger electrical connector on the passenger side... this is an AODE or 4R70W tranny.. these are computer shifted , pressure controlled

There are 2 different lengths of an AOD , only 1 inch difference in the tail housing length.

The TV laikage between the carb/RFI is more important for setup than a 700/4L60. AOD's can be real finicky on incorrect geometry setup for the TV cable
