AOD shifts hard into OD

I just bought this truck so I have no history of it.

The transmission i'm sure is an AOD. It shifts pretty hard into overdrive and at lower speeds (in the OD range tho) it wont shift into OD until i let up on the throttle, even if I am only lightly on the pedal. This is costing me gas mileage, although it might be normal IDK.

I know the hard shifting is not normal tho. All other shifts and functions are fine.

Any idea what I need to do? Could it be that the rear tires are not stock sized?

hard to say. AOD's are "clunky" into OD as a general rule. What gears does it have (if you know) and what speed does it shift into OD at 0 throttle? I think I have specs based on rear gear ratio and speedometer reading.


Was the vehicle a factory AOD setup or has it been retrofitted? If it's stock, I'd find an online tutorial/how to for adjusting the TV cable. There are at least 3 different ways it can connect to the throttle body/carb, and in any case misadjustment can kill the transmission very quickly. It's not like a traditional "kickdown" cable/rod where you can drive the vehicle without it and it'll only 'kinda shift funky.'

Its a factory installed AOD. Shifts into overdrive about 40mph at zero throttle based on what the speedometer says. The tires are not stock size so the actual speed is unknown.

I may need to adjust the TV cable I don't know. I'll probably have the transmission shop do that so I know its right....

I have the same trans in my 89 Lincoln mark 7. Depending on the parts inside the transmission, especially the od side they do kinda clunk into overdrive. As far as the tv cable on the side of throttle body or carburetor replace the plastic bushing with the bronze one. Don't let fools try to adjust the cable by ear. Either you or somebody hook up an oil pressure guage to the middle port of transmission you want reading at 33 psi. Your adjustment is pretty close now. My 84 mark 7 would shift into overdrive at 41 mph with foot off throttle, and shift back down at same speed, with foot lightly on throttle. As far as the not shifting into overdrive when hot, my 89 Lincoln is doing that now. The fix is to drop the pan, and replace the trans boost valve and sleeve, along with the o rings. Don't order the high performance kit unless you want hard shift into overdrive. I went with superior kit online. It ran $59.99. The sleeve that the the original valve rides on wears out, that's why you replace both parts. Oh yea, while your in there pull the overdrive servo and see if the bushing it rides on is worn. You might want to replace servo and sleeve while apart. As far as rough upshifts1-3 make sure your truck is in good tune. 1 bad cylinder can exaggerate a up shift, and make it rough. get a non lock up torque converter that will fix that but it will run hotter so upgrade the cooler but it will perform better and smoother
