I would be wary of the vaseline since although it is a petroleum grease, it isn't designed as a high duty lubricant. Hydrodynamic bearings that are all over an internal combustion engine and worst of all, camshaft lobe/lifter interface, all depend on a couple of molecules of lubricant to prevent metal to metal contact. If those molecules aren't specifically suited to the 2,000psi it will see in main and rod bearings (even higher in camshaft lobes), the pressures will collapse the lubrication film and bye bye bearings.
