Assembly Lube's, 4Jaw Chuck- I need your recipe!
 
I was hopeing to get the boards opinion on assembly lubes.
I see where my cam came with a small tube of moly grease, so that is what I plan on using on it.
But for the rest of the engine what do you guys recommend?
I have a rather large container of LubriPlate grease (kinda cream color), would that make a suitable assembly lube?

I use STP for all engine assembly except for rings, straight 30wt for that. If you buy some moly powder you can make your own lube. Lubriplate is OK too but not for cams, I don't take chances with cams.

4JawChuck, I have a supply of Moly powder. How do you make your own?

I mix it with synthetic grease, the only difference between the "cam" grease and the moly bearing grease is the amount of moly in the mix. Being able to mix it with synthetic is a plus.

Nah! I just keep adding moly until it is a sticky mess. It's a good idea to wear rubber gloves when you do it, moly powder is impossible to get out of the pores of your skin. Those cam lubes are more of a paste so keep adding moly until you get a paste.

in case anybodies wondering, i was told i could use vaseline back in the 70's, i think it was my 392, and i did, and it worked fine on the main and rod bearings. it is petrolium after all. :eek:

I would be wary of the vaseline since although it is a petroleum grease, it isn't designed as a high duty lubricant. Hydrodynamic bearings that are all over an internal combustion engine and worst of all, camshaft lobe/lifter interface, all depend on a couple of molecules of lubricant to prevent metal to metal contact. If those molecules aren't specifically suited to the 2,000psi it will see in main and rod bearings (even higher in camshaft lobes), the pressures will collapse the lubrication film and bye bye bearings.

I've been using White Lube on all my engine re-bilds for YEARS, and haven't had any problems. I agree with 4-jaw on the cams. Don't vary from manufacturers specs on those.
