Astronomers?

For a while now, I've noticed a planet that is visible, west of the moon, from sunset till about midnight. Does anybody know which one it is?

Usually, the weather guys mention when the planets are close, but I haven't heard about this one.

Malc,

That's an interesting site. The planet I'm seeing every night is brighter than any I've seen in the past (Venus, Mars, Saturn), so it may me a comet, although they usually make the news. I'm guessing it is probably Saturn passing by us closer than usual, in full exposure to the Sun.

usually the brightest one is venus but i dont think it's ever up that much after sunset so that leaves jupiter. EXCEPT as you know Mars was extremely close, closer than it's ever been in a zillion years, which is why all the rover's to mars went this summer. it is still very close so could be....does it look red? i'm not up on what is where right now, check a farmers almanac. if you look at it with binoculars, if it is jupiter you will see the four moons in a line thru it.

i think it's Jupiter, it's one of the brighest objects in the sky. it's easy to check this out. if you have a small telescope or a good set of binoculars and a steady hand, you will be able to see 4 of it's moons, as already posted by bullheimer. with my little sears 'scope i can see 2 bands on it even. Venus is most noticeable just after sunset and before sunrise. Mars is very close now but is reddish. Vulcan is too far from ontario to see clearly from my house. but i think i'll go there anyway, shields up!

the universe.http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/s...de/skyatnight/ click on "Solar System" at left then go to "Find out what you can see in the sky this month".

Post I know where my towel is

The really bright one is Venus. It was right next to the moon Monday night. Tonight, just after sunset, the reddish one by the moon was Mars, with bright Venus further to the west. Saturn and Jupiter are also up later in the evening, more toward the east.

The one I see must be venus. It's just west of the moon before sunset, passing from east to west before any stars are visible.

Kevin,

I've seen that CNC program somewhere before. Is that done with relative or absolute coordinates?
