auto body lead
I am looking to buy some auto body lead, a friend of mine who uses the stuff said that the rectangle bars are no good that I should buy the round skinny ones. Both of them are 30/70 , is there a difference between the 2?
|
If they are both 70/30 I can't see where there would be a difference. I did run into a bad batch years ago though-everything that was done in the shop with that lead later popped-impurities we figured at the time. Maybe your friend had the same thing happen with the rectangular bars he had? Years ago you could buy both 70/30 and also 80/20 but I don't see the 80/20 offered anywhere.

body solder
70-30 is 70-30 no matter the shape. the reason some don't like to use the rectangular bars is that they are harder to apply due to the extra heat needed to melt them. [the bars are thicker]. I found that the best way to use the bars is in a mush pot. [do you know what that is??]. For hand application I always use the solder in wire form. I have a friend that buys the bars and halves them with a shear to make them easier to use.

Willys educate me What is a mush pot?(that isnt when you jump off a stage into a crowd of people) ha ha That's a good idea to cut the bars in half cause I could get a rectangle bars cheaper than the round.

A mush pot is a cast iron vessel that lead is melted in. Plumbers use them as well reloaders that cast their own bullets. The pot is kept at a temperture that keeps the lead in a mushy state, but not molten. After you heated and tinned the area you want to work, you pick up some of the softened lead with the back of your paddle, and apply it as if you were putting plaster on a wall. This method is so much easier when you have a large area to work.
I forgot to mention that the bars are cut lenghtwise for hand application. |
