I know several people who do this when welding body panels just for the improved visibility at the arc since it helps to eliminate one of those helmets' annoying characteristics, the fact that they tend to get so dark right at the weld it makes it hard to follow a seam. This probably would make little difference with a conventional lens but because of the way these things work changing the contrast by using a bright light will help quite a bit with the auto Dark helmets.
