If I ever get to the point where I can make the videos I was talking about, the first one would be on the industrial sewing machine. Set-up, maintenance, minor repairs, basics, tips and tricks, etc. Everything else is secondary until you can control the sewing machine.

I've used SmartFlix before and you need to read the reviews before you rent... they are very accurate and can help narrow down what you need.

If Mr. TwoLakes seriously wanted to get a dvd set made and get paid for it SmartFlix will rent/sell/distribute titles for you.

Thanks Killer. I like the T-shirt that says " Old Upholsterers never die, they always re-cover".

Dan, I know that time and money are the same word when you are the owner...So , how about a kick start page to raise the funds for video production. Donors could get free or discounted DVD based upon contribution. You have a large following on this board....you may be surprised how much could be raised. I would support your efforts, for the sole reason of helping YOU, after you have helped so many. Kickstarter

I would advise against kickstarter. Up front money means little if you don't have the time to invest in a quality video.

Plus there are so many other videos out there. Go to the Sailrite page and watch their videos... there are dozens of them:

Videos for Do It Yourself Canvas & Boat Projects

All about large projects using heavy fabrics. Sure there is a sales pitch, but its free and face it, no matter how many videos you watch, you need machine time, not tv time.

A quick search of 'upholstry' on youtube returned :

About 332,000 results

The first video? Automotive Upholstery Tutorial - Diamond Tufting.

The information is out there, and while I would never deter a man from making a dollar from his craft, I would say that not every en devour is a money maker.

And your recommendation is based on what? Your vast knowledge of upholstery? A quick search of almost any subject will net you 332,000 results. You may have gotten more results if you spelled upholstery correctly. When we start talking about boat and canvas projects on an automotive site I'd say we were a little off topic. I have news for you. There are dozens of ways to accomplish the same exact thing in upholstery. Some ways are easier than others, and there is no substitute for having as much knowledge about a topic as is possible. Some of the videos on You tube are helpful and some are not. Not everyone has 40 years of experience to share.

What's with the harsh words?

I just pointed out that there are many available videos out there for free. And that watching a video is not a replacement for sitting at the machine.

And no, there is no difference in sewing a box cushion or reupholstering a chair or recovering a bench seat. The machine puts the stitch in the fabric. How you cut the pattern, place the component parts, what needles or thread to use is experience. And you get that by making box cushions, reupholstering chairs and recovering bench seats.

Make a video.. I would be one to buy it. But till that happens there are a lot of resources for the taking.

Funny, it sounded to me like you were saying don't bother, everything is out there for free and anything I would come up with would be a waste of my time because it wouldn't sell. I didn't bring up this subject, others here are asking me to do videos.

That's not what I meant at all.

There are a few dvd courses out there:

Sid Chavers Co. - Auto Interior Artist - DVDs
Auto Upholstery Instruction, How To Reupholster A Car Video [book]

Complete Auto Upholstery Training Course «

I think the last entry is probably what most people would want and all total its 12 videos for $330.

I have purchased the Sid Chavers videos, watched them 50 or more times , still like watching them . I have the Ron Mangus carpet video, it too is well worth the money. I have even travelled to Ron's shop in Rialto for a custom headliner class he taught, it was priceless info he shared, and he was a real "open book" for any upholstery question. I enjoy the different perspectives. The DVD's don't replace the 4000 hours I invested on my own spinning my wheels, but I can tell you they affirmed that 2000 hours were spent learning what a guy could show me in 5 minutes. I guess i was just too stupid to quit, most folks would have. It took them years to discover solutions. I would gladly purchase a DVD from a 40 year veteran, chances are I will see something that will change my game, and I don't have another 40 years left to learn it.
