axle id

i have a 12bolt front gm axle where would i look for the bill of material and or model#,gear ratio and whether its a limited slip or open diff? all i have found so far is GM and the number 8 what yall' think

Drain it and remove the cover. Look at the open part of the carrier and see if there are a couple of coil springs visible, with a couple of more hidden farther back. Or maybe just a flat, S-shaped spring. Those are signs of a clutch-type positraction carrier. If there's nothing in there but a finger-sized pin and some gears facing inward, it's a peg-leg. If it looks like the pic below, it's a Gov-lock.



Look around the outer edge of the ring gear. You might find a part number, usually 7 digits, and a series of four 2-digit numbers. Two of those four are the tooth counts of the ring gear & pinion gear. Divide the big one by the little one & that's your ratio. The other two will be the date of manufacture, month & year.
