I've installed several of these in F-body cars. They work OK, stiff until they're broken in and the cable is too long. I always really disliked the cast shift lever.
I actually really like the OEM GM "sport" shifter. It has detents so that if you press up and slightly to the right as you upshift, it will stop the shifter from going any further than just one gear. It's all I used in my '81 Camaro and '74 T/A, never missed a shift.
You can tell the shifters apart by looking at the plastic dust cover/slider the shift lever goes thorough- if it has oval holes and the shifter will pivot to the right, it's the "good" one. The photo below has an arrow pointing to the oval hole. The standard shifter hole is round.
