B&m transpak problems

Hello everyone I'm new to this forum but have been getting alot of great advice from the search engine on this site.I recently had my th350c rebuilt and installed into my 82 c10 swb and it ran great, had problems with my starter and broke a few teeth on the flexplate so while I had the trans out I thought I would have a transpak from b&m installed to go along with my 383. I had the person who rebuilt my trans put the kit in and I put the trans back in the truck.went for a test drive and could barley feel the shift like before I had the kit I stalled.then I tried to downshift manualy from drive,it would downshift to 2nd but not 1st it's like I have no shift kit and I can't get first gear.I used dextron synthetic but after reading the b&m manual it said use type f.could this be a problem. Any help would be appreciated guys I've searched my brains
out to no avail,thanks again.

Fluid type has nothing to do with the problem on not down shifting to first manually at speed.

the kit was not fully installed or there was no special design spring for the valve spool assembly for manual low control. This special spring blocks the valve in place, so you can command low gear at any speed

I think I'd be going back to the person that installed the shift kit, to see if they have any input.

The B&M Tranpak kit can be installed three different ways to get the results for what you want.

Heavy Duty - for towing
Street - for street and competition
Competition- not for street use...competition only

Depending on how your mechanic installed the components will determine how the trans will shift and perform.

I have used the street installation info to install the kit in two different TH350 transmission. Both yielded great gains in performance and shift feel. A good solid feeling shift between gears when in DRIVE and 'normal' acceleration. Great hard shifts between gears (and tire spinning at shift points) under hard acceleration in DRIVE.

If starting out in LOW gear the shifting was manual. Had to manually move the shifter to go to the next gear. With the trans in DRIVE and the kickdown linkage connected, the trans would downshift automatically as it should. I could also manually downshift the trans with the shift lever.

I have attached a simplified version of the installation instructions below. No pictures are included in that version.

He installed the street setup,it does great in drive,it just won't manually shift into 1st.I talked to him and he said he did everything according to the installation instructions for street.he told me to check the shift linkage to make sure it was fully engaging into first on the trans linkage at it was.

My experience with Ford trannys(C6 and C4) is that if you want to have manual control of low gear you need to install the Full Competition version of the B&M TransPak. Otherwise it will ignore your manual commands, they have some sort of shift overide valving in the stock valvebody.

Aren't some of the TH-350's the same way??

TH350 and TH400 trannys both will shift out of first even when in manual low, unless you replace the manual low spring w/a stiff spring or sleeve (TH350), or grind flats on the 1/2 shift valve (TH400).

Will the shifter physically go into first? If not there is a bolt inside the transmission that might be hitting the internal linkage. I just put the cheapy b&m kit in and it makes note that this might happen. If it does they tell you to file the bolt head down till it clears.

brass sleeve.checked the detent lever and found it wasnt fully engaging when in 1st.took it for a test drive and it ran like a champ, full manual control in all gears.should have don it myself from the get go.oh well lesson learned.thanks for the help guys
