ted 46,

With a bent push rod comes the thought of a bent valve. If setting the distrubutor 180 back does not fix the backfire then do a compression check to see if a valve is stuck open.

Sorry

Doc here

My thoughts EXACTLY...Don't consider it a fix until you find out what bent the push rod....

Push rods don't normally bend or dement on their own...

A stuck open valve would give you both a backfire and bend a push rod...

If your timing is on, Go to the valve that had the bent rod...use a sledge hammer handle
(not the anvil end...unless your REALLY p*ssed off at it...)

and work the valve up and down...Does it travel freely and not hang?

If not, Think Valve job.....

Even if it does travel free, do the compression test, It may be demented or burned at the end of the travel leaving it slightly open...

Doc
