Backfire

I have a 351 clevo that runs fine at idle and when you pull away gently but if you give it too much gas then it back fires through the carb, when the car is run for a while it seems to go away? It has just had the original dizzy replaced with an electronic one and the timing is set sweet.

usually a pop from the carb is due to a lean spot. Sounds like when the engine is too cold there's not enough choke which is why it goes away. Check the float level, fuel pressure, accel pump (etc).

In your case I'd also take a peek at the timing. 10-14 btdc and 36 full advance.

backfire no more

Thanks for all your help, I sorted out the choke and fixed the vacuum pipe connected to the dizzy then reset the timing and she runs all sweet now.
