With a bit of experience you will be able to spread a fairly large area neatly knowing what areas are going to need the most fill, and about the amount of filler you need to mix and how thick you need to apply, Hit it with a 8 inch orbital with 36 grit followed by using a straight line sander and sanding blocks and have it straight and knocked out fairly quickly without many applications of filler. Keep practicing and hang in there. If you have a really large area to do, a drywall spreader may help you get the bodyfiller slapped on and spread smooth quicker. In areas where the filler will need to be feathered in, go and spread the edge thin so you don't have a big ridge of filler and make it easier to feather in when it comes time to sand.

Back when I was a senior in high school, my afterschool job was as a gopher at a major car dealerships body shop...this was back in '87. I remember the guys using those long board air sanders...very neat tool. I also remember the day the guy came out to demo a plasma cutter... HUGE dollars back then, but I was impressed! I'm wishing like hell now I had stuck around those guys when I had free time to learn... back then all I was interested in was HP! Hindsight is 20/20!!
