bad transmission?

Ive got 89 ford probe that we just put a lightly used transmission out of a 91 that i had a tranny man go through and make sure it was good and reseal it that was about 5 years ago and i just got the car running but the piece of crap acts like it missing first gear (stupid automatics anyway) could it be the cheap used torque converter? i don't know and i almost forgot we had to put a wiring harness on it from a Mazda but it fits just fine i hope my boss put it on and he went to school to be a mechanic

The reason I asked is that in most automatics if not all, reverse and 1st use the same clutch pack. I don't know much about Fords tho'.
