There's a thread over on the HAMB about using a motor and rheostat out of an old tread mill exerciser. Sorry, couldn't find it quickly. Long and short is that the tread mill motor replaces the wood saw motor and gives you infinite speed adjustment.
Makes me wish I hadn't passed on that $50 wood band saw last summer!
