Well I had a metal bandsaw awhile back but nomore, now I need another I see wood bandsaws pretty cheap&I saw something about there's s pulley to convert it to a metal bandsaw.Has anyone heard of this?
Yes you can use a wood band saw to cut metal . You have to change the drive pulley to slow it down if it doesn't have a step pulley on it . If you are cutting shapes it will be fine , otherwise I don't think you will be happy with it .
I have an old Sears table top band saw, and I was able to purchase a different pulley and shorter blade for metal cutting. It works great as long as you don't get in too big of a rush.
A rheostat is not what you want to do to slow the bandsaw down. If you had an actual variable speed drive so the torque remained the same that would be the way to do it.
I had an 18 in band saw that had a jackshaft system , just move the belts to different pullies, metal chips can build up, especially when using wax when cutting aluminum. . adding brushes to keep the wheels clean helps.
I use my little hobby Sears to cut aluminum regularly and it works just fine. All I have to do is remember to clean the drive wheels after each use. This one is direct drive so can't use it for steel, so I use my Bosch jig saw with fine down cut blades (if I can find them) on slow speed to do that.
