Look for the simple solution first. One time I had a nasty noise when moving on a motorcycle and I thought the worst (transmission etc). It turned out to be a bolt came loose and let a drive shaft cover hit a u-joint. I had myself all worked up over a very little thing.

If the car is original, then does it not have multi-leaf springs in the rear?
