barley any oil to the top of the heads

hi. i have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gt with a 3800 series 2 v6 (not supercharged). it just started a low knockin sound. if u let it set and cool down it stops knockin until it runs for a min then itll start again. so i took the valve cover off of the front closet to the radiator thats where the knocks coming from. i started it upwith it off and it didnt shoot any oil out. could it be the oil pump gettin weak? there was barley any oil settin in the top of the head.

Doubtful on the oil pump. More than likely the noise you hear is one of the roller lifters which tend to make noise and not pump much oil up when they get trash in them. This is a rather common problem in the late 80's to late 90's sbc line of engines. All I do is wait until the next oil change, pour a half can of sea foam into the oil, start the car and let it run for 20 minutes, then proceed with the oil and filter change. usually when I fire it back up in most cases the noise is gone. If the noise did not improve I would let it ride and just live with the noise as it's really not going to cause any damage.
