8 to 10 is fine, but I would set it as the engine likes it, get all the advance you can, start out with 12 degree`s before top dead center, and dial in the advance curve to have a full 38 degree`s total all in by 3000 RPM, if detonation is heard, retard the timing 2 degree`s at the time until it goes away and it`s set. your vacuum advance should be connected to a ported vacuum source, or one that pulls vacuum off idle and not at idle.
