Hi..
I'm finally gonna start on my collectable game room, cave whatever you want to call it..
When the oil burner was worked on they didn't replace the stucko like cerment that goes around the burners neck.. so the basement has some soot.. not much, most located at the furn/burner end of the room/basemant.. I'll fix this first.. but
on getting the walls ready for paint..
will tsp clean the cinderblock wall enough to have the sealer not fail..
the plan is a A)landry/sew room b)burner work shop c) the game room..
the walls will get sealer then paint.. haven't picked a theme..
not sure if a racing checkered flag black and white on one wall will be tackie..
most of the two cinderbloc walls will be coered with plexy display cases for all my 1:24th cars, etc..

want to paint the walls before I frame in the room(other 2 walls) but with an open flame, and paint fumes.. might not be the best combo..
has anyone used those waterbased sealers.. do they last/work?
like to get this rolling while the snow/cold out.. but that means heat will have to at least come on, after the wall gets a coat.. at somepoint..
the oilbased sealers, how long you think before the heater could be fired after coating it..
thanks for any pointers/ideas/ etc..

Personally, I would frame in the block walls too...also insulate them. Will make a cozier room, dont you think?...Code around here calls for that....in new buildings anyways.

basement is plenty cozy.. it's the warmest in the winder and the coolest in the summer(20-30* difference)
yes live to frame all four. but a few things..
not code here(not needed)
I'd rather not give up 6" fore and aft
as it'll be 14'x16.5' as it stands now.. as the placement of the bulkhead/stairs to basement/chimney all suck.. but in 1934 this is how they did things.. cellar stairs down the middle, chimney 7' from one wall 10' from another.. bulk head on sidewall(better placement would've been back wall) instead of sticking furn/heater in area between chimney and wall.. it's off chimney toward the back.. (stupid) and oil tank is in corner.. (this might get put in that unuseable area bewteen chimney/wall)
guess'n basements when coal fired heat was used wasn't ment for much other than maybe tool/xmas storage.. lol as this set up is for the birds..

but with a house on a dead end street and 3 lots.. I'll deal with it's shortcomings.. as my morg. is about half of the going rent for a 2 bed apartment..

I hear ya on crappy basements.....My house is over 100 years old and the basement is field stone under the old part of the house. There is a filled in coal chute too....Its high and dry though, which is surprising.

When it was coal fired heat all that was down there was the furnace and a coal bin and all you did down there was feed the furnace. Maybe store some garden tools or something. Sometimes there was a root cellar for the canned goods and taters and such but that was the way it was on the farm. One of the neatest cellars I have been in the guy painted and cleaned everything and just left it the way it was. Of course he was a bit OCD about it and he had shelving that he had his stuff in. A TV and couch, reefer and lazy boy. I went over there a few times for a football Sunday and admired the trophies his son had gathered from racing.

No really, these are must haves for a man cave...

pinball machine and/or huuuuuuge flat screen hdtv with a good surround system, a mini bar, a popcorn machine(old style) and a brass pole just
randomly placed in the center of the room. oK, not something I'd do but would be one jealous bastard if you did that!
