I am building my non T-bucket 21 T hot rod truck. It is long, low and mean, you sit IN this T not on it. I wanted to get some ideas, I am getting close to needing a motor. If I just get a basic 290 horse crate engine, I can easily be on the road this summer.
While the car will be all in at less than 2,000 pounds - this is not the motor I wanted when it is done. I have a nice credit at Summit and was thinking I would get the basic 4 bolt crate motor and get this thing on the road. I have a TH350 trans that works (also not my final trans, I want and OD trans).
Is this push to get it on the road a bad idea? Since it is a frame up build it might be nice to be able to iron out what ever problems it has before going with a higher horse motor.
OK all you Ford Flathead people - you have me thinking.
to get it on the road, I will use the SBC, but if I were to build the Flathead I want over the next year, how hard of a swap is it between SBC and Ford Flat head? I think there is an adapter for the trans Bell housing.
This project is more about cool than speed, I would think the swap of SBC to Flathead is doable.

Hey, Bigfoot, don't pay any attention to my big mouth. If a flat head turns your crank, it's your nickle so do it. That's what it's really about anyway. Hey I build guns and sometimes I have been known to chamber a modern Bolt gun with an older anemic cartridge for the same reasons you love flatheads. I'm with you on that. And yes, I'm pretty sure you can still get bellhousing adapters and all you need to do this.
Hey, BTW, what am I talking about? I have wanted to build a hot rod and an old GM Hydromatic Trans in it, just because I used to love them.
Has anyone cared to read the original post? The guy wanted a simple turn key powerplant. He didn't ask for a debate on horsepower or fuel economy. He asked about a simple drop in and go engine that was inexpensive and simple. Efficiency was never discussed and he clearly stated he was not building a high performance race car. Please consider the original posters questions with responses.
I just did read it, he wants a good sbc crate motor to get on the road to shake down his rod before going hi-po. A few posts above yours hes considering building a flat head ford to replace the sbc with later.
He asked which crate sbc to get and a lot of people gave their advice and experience on which one was best and WHY. Am I missing something?
Bigfoot go the L31 with TRI-Power and rams horns, now thats cool:thumbup:
