Battery "white stuff"

I just had a guy here at work ask me what CAUSES the white stuff to grow on the battery terminals in his car. I told him I didn't really know what CAUSES it but I might be able to find out for him(and me also).so, what does cause this junk to appear? Thanks.

It's caused by the sulfuric acid used in batteries that produce hydrogen gas. When you start your car, small amounts of gas are released through the vent cap. These fumes combine with other things to form corrosion on your cables and terminals.

Thanks S-10. Is it the same for all batteries? I mean the old style with vented caps and todays sealed type.

Yes, it's the same thing with all "lead acid" batteries. Even today's sealed batteries can start leaking gas around the terminals or develop a small crack in the case. To help prevent the white stuff from forming, you can remove the cables from the battery and clean the cables and terminals with a wire brush and apply a anti-corrosion paste or petroleum jelly to the terminals when you re-install the cables.
