BB Chevy "popping" out exhaust

I'm getting a "popping" out the exhaust when the engine is reved. It seems to go away as the timing is advanced, however, the timing has to go to what appears to be 50 degrees at 3000 rpm to make it go away. This doesn't seem right. Any suggestions?

popping

Some basics first,,

Check cap for any cracks or spark arcing....

Confirm that the balancer is marked correct at tru TDC....

Check plug wires to confirm they are not arcing.....

Kinda sounds like a burnt exhaust valve which is NOT common on a BBC...? Might have a seat problem or a cut valve...?

Just thought of one other thing a broken valve spring...? A compression test should shed some light on the problem...

The engine is new; Edelbrock heads/valves, so I don't think it's a burnt valve. I'll check the cap and rotor and the wires for arcing. I'm wondering if the distributor may be a tooth off.

popping

You may want to wait untill dark and then fire it up and see if you have any spark jumping..

I would start with the bascis before you look in to the valave springs, cam etc.... If it was me.....

If there is no spark problems then you need to confirm TDC next....

What distributor is in this???

The distributer is an early '80s GM HEI that was curved with an Accel Coil and module. We're making new wires for it now; one is a bit burned.

Popping out exhaust is also sign of a rich mixture.

Could also have a cracked spark plug.

454C10 you hit it close. I had a Holley throttle body on it and when we richened the idle mixture it settled out. I've had the Holley TB for 15 years on both SB and now the BB and it's been nothing but a pain. I removed the TB an hour ago and replaced it with a 750 Holley and it runs great. The Holley TB will be making an appearance on E-Bay soon!

Thanks to all you guys for your help.
