BBC 454 Valve seal question

hey guys,
i have read on some other websites about these guys who arent running any valve stem seals on the exhaust valves only the intake. and some guys not even running valve seals at all...
my question is... is this really ok to do. im putting my motor back together and im having some issues with springs hitting the seals and i know what seals i need but i really dont wanna spend the extra money right now to get the guides cut and re-installed i just want to drive the truck occasionally not everyday and really want to get it running i know im not doing it right but the heads do have new guides.. let me know if any of you guys have done it and is it ok... i know that it will smoke on start ups.
thanks guys

You need at least intake seals. If the stock umbrellas won't clear the springs. Try 455 Buick intake seals or the black plastic Fel=Pro seals used on hd small block Chevy 3/8 stem exhaust seals.

Thanks bobcrman.... Your always helping out on here... I looked up the Buick 455 seals they kinda look like o ring style is that what they are or Are they just really narrow umbrella seals... And I haven't been able to find the hd sbc seals you mentioned any idea where I can look for those. I know sbc can run o ring seals. Wish I could do that but theres no groove on my valves to accept that

The Buick seals are a positive seal with a retaining ring. Look somewhat like the 87 and later SBC positive seal only for a 3/8 valve stem. The other seal, a black plastic umbrella, is only used on medium/heavy duty SBC powered pickup trucks and medium duty stake, bus, utility trucks. Any auto machine shop should have them in stock.
