help again pleeze... i am looking at buying a 1976? 454 chevy engine , it is complete ,alt. starter,carb etc. the guy tells me it has (the good) heads ,man those words cost me money before.
does anyone know what the good head #'s are or an easy way to identify the oval port heads without pulling them off?? i can get it for $500. cdn. is this a good price even for regular heads .it runs well but needs a lot of pretty. thanks mike :p |

The best oval port heads from the factory for big block chevys were made from 1971 -1975. here are the castings #'s. 336781, 3999241, 353049 and 3993820. These are the best castings to get. Simply remove the valve covers which are held down by 7 bolts that are 7/16". look around the springs u will see some numbers and if the numbers are covered by oil just scrape off the oil with a screw driver or a rag so u can better see the casting numbers. hope that helps you.
