I'm still debating if i want to do a 383 stroker or a 454 build to put in my truck, 1971 C10.
the truck has a 350 in it so i was going to pull it and rebuild it into a 383 stroker. then i was told that the motor is too old to do that with and that i just need to get a new engine and rebuild that.
ok, no problem.
i start looking around and it seems like i can get a BBC/tranny for a few dollars more than i can get a SBC/tranny.
if im going to get something, tear it down and start a build, wouldnt it be a good idea to start with something a little "bigger" and go from there?
i have all the parts picked out, just waiting for a ready block to get it all.
im at work so i dont have my parts list in front of me but im thinking everything i need to buy is going to come out to around 2500, plus the 725 i have spent on the block/heads.
if he doesnt have another block, he'll give me the 200 back on the block and ill search for another one.
so it looks like i'll be under 4k for the build
budget is around 5k but i still need a tranny so i figure that'll be around a grand...
Its just a small block street car,but it has decent parts in the engine, solid roller/5 speed/ 3.50 gears
Its currently in prep mode for paint.
Its not a strip car in anyway other than it makes good power.I like to turn corners(doesnt handle great).
I buy a lot of $50.00 hamburgers.
If I had 4.30 gears and slicks I would need a cage Im sure
took back the block and swapped it out for a standard bore 4 bolt main, 289 block.
i'll take that to the machine shop on monday to clean it and see what they say.
Good swap! Might ask your machinist if he's familiar with drilling out the block's oil passages from the top of the mains up to the cam bearings. My machinist has done this on a couple of my blocks, and for others. I think he uses a .312 (5/16) drill, but I'm not sure. It keeps plenty of oil to the cam and up.
Are you running a double roller chain or gear drive?
?? reason??. I've ran mine for over 10k hard miles, and it still is an 11 second street car. Pete Jackson quiet drive & hyd. roller cam. My son has a 427 with the same gear drive and a solid roller making 575hp at the flywheel. He has over 5k miles on his.
the machinst asked if i wanted moly or cast cam bearing...
im assuming the moly are better but are they necessary?? i dont want to build something and then have something small like that fail because i went for the cheaper option.
it is a std bore so im not doing any machining until i buy the parts.
i'll get it cleaned, cam bearings, and freeze plugs installed and whatever else comes with a block prep.
but that's it for now.
talked to the machinist, the block is ready to pick up.
he was asking about rings but its weird because i only wanted it cleaned....
anyways, he says it'll clean up to .060 so when i get the pistons in, i'll take the block back up there with the pistons and have it bored.
i was thinking that if it will clean up at .030, go ahead and do that, then i can rebore it to .060 down the line when i want to stroke it more but someone told me not to waste my time with that, just go .060 over and be done with it....
if i were to bore it .030 over, the only thing i would need to change is the piston size correct?
i would still use a 4.250 crank and 6.385 rods or would i need to go down to a 6.135 rods???
and the CR wouldnt change...id still want around 9.5 or so with the 781 heads right?
Only difference is .030 over pistons instead of the .060 overs.
It may bring 9.5 down to about 9.4. Enter your #'s onto an online calculator.
Keep the same rods.
measure the heads. Lots of rats end up with 8.5:1 cr,,,, If you manage 9.7:1 you will have a rat that destroys tires
