049s can handle 400+ with no worries. The rectangle heads have such large ports that any HP gains you might get will be met with decreased torque and throttle response.

If you had said 500-600 hp I might say go for the rectangles, but 049s and 780s are fine for what you plan.

I built a 468 recently that made a solid 390hp on stock 049s with a 218/224 cam with a measly 8.5:1. You can perk up those 049s with a little pocket porting, a good valve job, and maybe some gasket matching. That and a wee bit bigger cam should put you squarely at an easy 450+ and be able to hit 6000 rpms without running out of breath.

Well I hate to disagree with Mr. BBCMudbogger but it goes abit farther then open or closed chambered heads. Basically that is correct ...the closed chamber heads are old tech. and open chamber are the current design. BUT there are differences in open chambered heads. You are on the right track, go with the 049 and/or 781 castings are the good design! ...But GM has a "smog" open chamber too and if you looking for stock GM pref heads stay away from these. As a reference if you run across a "peanut port" head, they have the good chamber too. I'm not advocating these for perf, only as a reference for comparison. Good Luck!
