BBC Heads

thanks for all your guys help on stuff.

I have some heads in question here that I COULD get
they are BBC casting #3993820 with L7 70 & GM11T on them
I looked on MorTec at them for numbers and they say 71 402
and 71-84 454 both have 113cc with 255/114 ports..
Can you tell me if these are good HiPerf heads or would I be
better with 396 head #3933148 on a stock 454 with low compression
to bump it up a few knotches?????
Thanks

I checked my BBC books but couldn't find a photo of the 148's. But I think those are truck heads. 366T, 396, and 427 was the listing I found for those.

I have a set of the 820's and they are good heads. But the ports on my heads are smaller than 255cc. I measured around 240cc ports and 112cc chambers. If you can buy them for a good price then they are worth rebuilding and using. Their exhaust port flows especially well so a cam with equal intake and exhaust duration should be used. Those heads were recommend for a street driven big block in the old "How to Hotrod a Big Block Chevy" book.

BB heads

I was just thinking of the 148's from the 396 because of
the 112cc chamber for more compression. I still have a set
as I said long ago 049's which the ports are 255/119, but the chambers
are 122cc
So it is rebuild the 148's or the 049's or leave the10114156's on there
??????????????????? they actually have 118cc chambers.
I am still thinking the 049's. These 156's that are on there now have those
adjuster and stud bolt in one....there IS NO adjustment...just tighten it down
and go. think I have this conversation with you before.
So what do ya think?? the 049's or the 148's with smaller chamberss? I heard
the 049's flow well.

I'm not sure but I would not use the 148's. They put those on truck engines (366T, 427T) and the 265hp 396. I bet they have extra small valves and ports.

I would use your current heads and try changing the cam first to get more power. Get a short duration cam (around 210 I /216E degrees at 0.050") with a narrow lobe separation angle (106 to 108) if you want a more lopy idle. Should work OK with a 3.55 gear and low cr. Otherwise, 110 lsa works about the best, however don't except much lope with a such and short duration cam and 110lsa.

Looks like you need pistons or 100cc heads to get the cr to what you need.

Those edelbrock heads (from your old post) seem like a good deal.

more HP OE 454

Thanks 454C10
Do you have a model or part# in mind for that cam
suggestion for my low cr stock 454??
I am on tight $$ otherwise I would rip this thing apart
and make a 550hp monster out of it...some day.
I mentioned before about those NON-adjustable rockers.
what do you know good or bad?

Man.....those non-adjustable rockers.

I really can't help you with that. All my experience has been with older engines.

Those newer heads may require a self-aligning rocker arm, which would add to the cost to run an aftermarket cam. That could push you to getting another set of heads.

I'll look for a short duration, narrow LSA, flat tappent cam and get back with you.

049's on newer block

Hey there 454C10,
Bumpstick replied as well saying can't run my 74 049's on
my #14015445 454 4 bolt. I was wondering WHY? That way
I could get rid of the 5/16" pushrod and use my 3/8" guide plates
with 3/8" pushrods and get better flow even thought the combustion
chambers are 122cc. Throw a big cam that maybe you suggest and
drive. I am concerned why the 049 comment came up. I can get them rebuilt
for fairly cheap.
HELP

I don't understand why the heads would not work, especially since you will be using an older style intake and carb and plan to install the engine in an older car. However, I can see the heads not working if the stock efi was used.

heads

454C10,
Don't know why that was said??? I bought the engine out of a 79
1 ton truck had 4 barrel intake and carb and ran. I may run the stock
intake till I get enough $$ for a perf one. Like I said the casting # is
14015445 454, 78-90 2 or 4 bolt and mine IS a 4 bolt. That is all it says
on MorTec, doesn't say tall or short deck..i assume it is a short deck.
Has plate glued to block on drivers side below where head bolts up. Says
[AC DELCO Engine remanf. for GM made in USA part # 1236 4786, BORE O.S.
.030, MAINS .030, THRUST BRGS 0.00, RODS .030] this tag is about 1.5"x2"
