Hey guys I'm new on this forum!
I have a 1950 chevy pick up that I've rebuild the 454 bbc that it had to around 525 hp and about the same in torque.
It had a manual 4 speed Saginaw and I know it will explode with that engine. My friend has a rebuilt New Process A833 non OD with the Hurst shifter out of a Mopar.
I wonder if it would do the job behind my BBC?!
It's going to be a street car daily/street performance hot rod pick up truck
It's plenty strong enough, the A833 is about the strongest muscle car 4 gear there was.
The hard part will be getting it adapted to the Chevy bellhousing, figuring out the correct clutch disc, and the correct pilot bushing for the back of the crank. Hopefully you can still get an adapter for the trans to bellhousing.
You might PM member "AutoGear" here, he deals with Muncie trans parts and seems pretty good on knowing who to go to for other 4 speed makes.
The A833 was used in the mid-80s Chevy trucks. There is a unique bellhousing that adapts it to the Chevy bolt pattern. I do not know if those A833s used a special input shaft or not, however.
Also---the A833 in the GM pickups was an overdrive that was
made from the Chrysler's parts.
So--if you want a true 1 to 1 4spd----cannot use the Chevy truck one.
if you want to go with a 3spd and an overdrive----sure.
Dodge pickups also used this trans as well using the Chrysler bolt pattern
3+overdrive.
Had an 82 D-150 with this trans----I really liked it (along with the 225/six)
Kind of a tall first gear but it got me around.
My memory is a little sketchy. There was a dual pattern GM/Dodge case or bellhousing. In theory you can put the GM case to use but you've got a weird length input gear Guys have been putting 833s in chevys since about 1965, so the info is out there.
Contact Jamie Passon at Passon Performance in Tamaqua PA. Hes a mopar 833 guru and was buying up the Chevy OD ones at a good clip. He may have some info or parts you can use. QuickTime makes a SBC - 833 bellhousing; but I dont know how they deal with the stupid-long input gear.
I dont know where the mopar shifter will end up in your truck cab but you should be able to use the "MY6" (chevy 833OD) TRUCK shifter in your truck. I bet you could trade your shifter off to someone who has the OD one. The factory chevy truck OD shifter is a Hurst competition plus.
Ask Jamie if you have to reconfigure the OD shifter to shift the non-OD unit properly as the 3-4 shift is reversed in the OD units.
Tell Jamie Nate from Auto Gear sez "hi" and PLEASE post up any info you get.
I don't know about the bell housing much and I'm from Canada and don't have much ppl around here that know these stuff.
As for the shifter I have the Hurst Vertagate inline racing ome! (That one you lift the switch from 1 to 2 and just change speed moving the shifter up and down without moving it left or right) with seperate shifter for the reverse. I kinda like this shifter since it's old school racing and feels great!....I'll try to find a way to fit it.
The only thing that bug me is the bell housing, clutch and flywheel thing...
The first version of the MY6 bolted to a stock Chevy bell housing as long as it had the 5 1/8" center hole. It also used the stock Chevy clutch. The second version still used the stock Chevy clutch, but used a dual pattern bell housing. All the internal parts interchange between the two, and they have an aluminum case which is not as strong as the cast iron case A833. The non OD internals will not fit in the aluminum case, and the OD internals will not fit the cast iron case.
