BBC oil pump on a SBC.

Have any of you used a big block chevrolet oil pump on a small block chevrolet? If so, does anything need to be modified to fit; Pump drive shaft , length, size, Stock BBC oil pickup tube, ETC. I know that people (Smokey Yunick) have done this modification with success. Input appriciated.

With the selections of pumps and pans and pickups available today there is no point. The idea of this very old school practice was to increase oil volume because the BBC pump had bigger vanes.

BBC pump has larger diameter spur gears with more teeth than a SBC. That wil allow the distributor timing run smoother (less pulses) and produce more oil more volume. The only advantage of using a BBC pump is it is smoother running. The Melling Select oil pumps are offered in a variety of pressure/volume for a SBC engine.

I tried to fit a BBC pump in a SB Chevy pan but the inlet opening of the pump was pointing towards the back wall of the oil pan and the tube would not fit. You will need to modify the oil pan and probably get a Stef's or KevCo custom tube and screen assembly. You must use a Moroso #22090 drive shaft that is 0.125" shorter thanb a SB Chevy shaft. I used a Melling Select 10552 +10% higher volume.

It is not worth the effort to attempt to use a BB Chevy oil pum on a SB Chevy engine because the Melling Select line of oil pumps includes pumps with a variety of pressures, volumes and designs for racing and high performance street engines. Melling Select includes a BB Chevy pump designed for a SB Chevy engine but I don't think the inlet position is designed to fit a SB Chevy oil pan. Melling Select also offers a billet pump for professional racing. TheMelling Select anti-cavatation oil pumps are designed for competition only because the oil pressure below 1500 RPM would be too low.

The Melling M99HVS will go into most pans. Its a slightly modified BBC pump. I still use this pump in circle track engines, but I modify it so that the bypass oil goes back into the sump.
