Before i install if i could get a better cam choice
okay me and my dad just rebuilt a stock 400 for STREET DRIVING. took everything down to the pistons and changed the rings and rod bearings. its a 3951511 block I had picked up from a dude out in tue mountains who had it in his 4x4 mud truck.(after he got it from a circle track racer) <<< his mouth
when we took the block apart and checked the cylinder walls it was in near perfect condition no scratches no nada. the block is back together now with the stock bottom end. (wish I had of changed the pistons at least but o well 4 now. #dished. The heads have been heavily ported , valve job, and we have springs up above .500 lift ,althought I'm not sure exactly how high. ..annnnnnnnnnnnd secondly 2 lastly we have and rpm intake. and 750 qjet. the part of this fairly stock 400 I want to get an opinion on is the cam thts in it. The # on the cam box indicate it 2 b SUMMITS k1107 CAM. which has a power band 3000-6500 in a 350. 292-302 advance 488/510 lift. hyd flat tappet. KEEP IN MIND the block is put back together if anything I will get a new pair of heads over the winter if y'all want to give me a few opinions there 2. but ITS A STREET MOTOR. A DAILY DRIVER 34 roundtrips miles to work. 2.73 gears in the car since its on the HIGHWAY ALOT. we have a choice of a 2800 and 3200 stall or y'all can help me there 2. goin in front of a powerglide 4 now. WHAT KIND OF CAM IS BEST FOR THIS MOTOR. |

I have someone with a rebuilt th350. but I kinda wanted 2 keep the powerglide 4 when I go drag racing. I wanna b pretty consistent. tht 1 shift puts me where I wanna b. I was thinkin 3.0 gears or 3.42 gears but I can't put a finger on excactly which

you said drag racing? powerglide first gear stock is 1.82 or 1.72 with any option you want after marker.2.02 is popular in small engines.
when I used a power glide in my 67 Camaro 355 I used 5.57 gears |

What we try to achieve is a final drive first gear ratio of around 10.0:1. A stock 'glide has a first gear ratio of 1.76:1, so if you married it to a 5.13 rear gear, the first gear final drive would be 9.03:1, still a little light.... An aftermarket 1.98 first gear in the 'glide and a 5.13 in the rear would make a launch ratio of 10.15:1, mo betta..... |

I got a 406 sbc with 5.13 gears not power glide though

when I say drag racing I mean bracket. but Friday night grudge runs aren't out of the pic either. will 5.13's kill my gas more than 2.73's would. |

I do not recommend 5.13s for your car.those are race gears.
I drove on the highway with them for 2 hours at 60 mph with the tach at 3700 rpm. I also do not recommend using a power glide in a heavy car that is driven as a street bracket car. If you can afford a 4 speed auto and 3.73 gears you will have a fun car that can travel. Thanks tech for the back up.and Hi rice, where you been? |

Yes 5.13 would have alot higher rpm than 2.73 not sure where you would be as I dont use the power glides but if you want drag race at all you will not like that 2.73 thats a hwy gear and with glide you would probly be able run 80.in first. But you need to choose what you are doing with car is it for hwy or drag you will need different gears for each for hwy I wouldnt run 5.13 if I was worried about gas mileage I drive mine daily but drag it alot if im cruiseing along I might get 6 miles to gallon if im lucky when right foot gets heavy I can watch gas hand move

I don't think my nova is a "heavy car". but if those gears are drag racing gears then yeah ill stray far away 4rm tht. and the only 4 speed I kno of is tht 700r4 trans and I've been told no bueno tryna put tht behind a 400. . so looks like besides the cam I need a trans and gear pinpoint too. if y'all care to help and answer questions.

Hey vinnie been on just been late at nite and unless your nova is. Striped down with fiberglass in the drag world its heavy

well forget everything drag. a good street car will do what it does @ the track regardless. .. so what's a direct name of a good 4 speed trans or ima just go grab tht rebuilt 350. but what cam would be a good 21-2300 rpm cruiser on the highway. in a 400 or is the cam I have already capable of tht.

And they make gears in the 6.00 plus range that ive seen they prob make bigger and with your stall choice I would go with atleast the 3200 your cam comes in at 3000 so you dont want to stall lower than that I use 3800 but know alot of people with 4000 and up but I turn little over 7200 rpm with solid roller cam thats in the 600 plus lift range
