beginner sewing machine

I am looking to get a sewing machine so my granddaughters can sew along side me in the shop. I have an old kenmore 120-49 that I used to learn on but it is in need of a good tune up. Is there any machine out there that is a decent beginner machine that is not a toy. the granddaughters are 8. The kenmore is a good machine but is a little difficult to use at times and I dont want them to get dicouraged. Question in a nutshell, tune up and repair the kenmore ar look for a newer machine and what kind.....Steve

I found a used Viking which has served me well and is simple enough to use and it sews some fairly heavy stuff just not as well as the Consew or something that is oriented to auto interiors though the Viking can do the job for a one time deal..

Back fall of last year my wife bought 3 sewing machines 2 for our daughter and daughter-in-law and one for her to teach our granddaughters how to sew on.She bought them at Walmart and if IIRC they were like 80 bucks apiece. My wife raved about how well these machines sewed and the simple set up of them. My wife has been a professional seamstress for the last 35 years so I have to believe that she knows her sewing machines . Me I know diddly about them............when she gets home I'll find out what make they were and post back.
