Belt throwing

Hey guys, can't keep the belt on my '89 k3500 4x4 454 c.i. Rebuilt the engine and installed long tube headers and kept the air pump but not hooked up. The pump sieved so I pulled it and ran a shorter belt. Can't keep a belt on it. Replaced tensioner. Tried every belt between 60" and 85". Still throws belts. I don't want to run an air pump that's not hooked up. Any Ideas?

Just guessing here, but maybe the rubber in your balancer is coming apart and letting the pulley walk forward causing the belt to also walk off. Happens to some of my high torque hotrods sometimes.

Make sure pulleys are aligned. Even slight out of alignment will throw belts.

slow it down

In the 60's that was a common problem when you pumped up a SBC, the Fix was to get the smaller corvette pullies to slow the belt down

Check with a straight steel rod it should fit flush with the inner groove on the crank pulley and the inner grove on whatever pulley you're checking at the same time.

Hey thanks. I guess it's possible for the brackets to be bent. I don't see how to adjust the various components.
