Bending square cross member??

Hey all. Putting a C4 Vette IFS in my 67 Dodge pickup. Need to make a front crossmember out of 2"x4" .188" wall square tubing. I needs the ends of cross member bent up about 30 degrees to meet the frame rails. I cant seem to find anyone local that has the capabilities. Any suggestions?

Only one I know of that does that sort of thing is Art Morrison..He is on the web..Other wise it is one of those deals where you cut a pie shape in the tube bend it and then weld it with gusseting..

You are looking for someone who can do a 'mandrel bend'. Good luck, I looked for a long time to do some 2x6 and was not succesful. I did find a few companies who could bend 2x4 the hard way using a mandrel bender, you need to search the heavy industry guys in your area. Also your steel supplier might know.

Yeah, this isnt as easy as I thought, LOL Figured with all the MII and Vette IFS kits on the market, any fabricator would have the dies and tooling. Apparently not! My other option is to make it out of four sheets of 10 gauge steel.

The tooling to do that mandrel bending job is just outrageously expensive so most do what you propose to do..You could still try Art for the crossmember as he makes a C-4 Ifs for rods..

OK, talked to Auto Weld, they can do it, but 1/8" wall max size. I was hoping for 3/16", but I guess I will settle with what I can get, LOL My ex boss is an engineer and huge into road racing and desert racing and says 1/8" will be fine. I'll keep you guys posted on progress.

What about cutting and welding it? .188 wall 2X4 seems a bit heavy to me.

Later, mikey

I would make some saw cuts and bend the tube myself.
Tig it back up and grind it flat.
I would then weld some reinforcing plate over the welded section.
A bit ugly, but very strong. And you can do it all yourself.

If you can weld, get in touch with Paul Horton - go to the welderseries website and order their frame curves. They just started selling 2x4 horizontal curves, which should be what you're after. I'll try to post a link, hope the mods let it through. Here it is: http://www.welderseries.com/catalog/...roducts_id=432

This will probably be stronger than a mandrel-bent curve since it preserves the wall thickness.

Anyway, I love how you built the mockup from wood to make sure it fits! Awesome work!

Interesting, good link. I suppose the whole cross member could be made of four pieces that way. I think I am gonna let Auto Weld build mine out of .125" wall, but those will be nice for kicking up the rear of the frame.
