3.08 gears (which i would like to keep because it is a daily driver), turbo 350 trans and 28 inch tires. although it will be a daily driver i want to have a good amount of horsepower and torque to have fun with.

ok mabey im not trying to build a daily driver but i probably would use it for a daily driver. im wanting a daily driver with a lot of kick. i might take it to the drag strip every once in a while but its main use would be in my truck that i drive everyday. i have been wanting to build an engine for my truck for about a year and i have finally decided what i want to build. now is a good time for me to build the enigine because it is my last year at my tech school and i dont have access to all of the tools and lift anywhere else.

Without getting lower gears maybe like 3.73 I wouldn't get a cam with any more duration than about 230.

I'm in a similar situation so take my word for it. I've got a TH350 with 3.08 in the rear as well in my '76 C10 on 33" tires. With a 226/228 at 0.50 camshaft in my 383 it is kinda lethargic under 3k RPM. I'm currenty gathering parts to put in a posi unit and 4.11 gears and that will really open her up, but I'm also not worried about cruising on the freeway because I'm in the middle of rebuilding a 700R4 to put in the TH350's place.

Reuse the stock crank if you can, 5.7 factory rods with ARP bolts would work just fine, keep the cam around 230 degrees @ .050 like previously suggested for a good cruize with 3.08 gears. Compression needs to be about 9.5-1 (dished pistons) for friendly pump gas use. Have the rotating assembly professionally balanced. Check for rod to cam clearance if using 5.7 or 6 inch rods.

3.73 gears would kill your mileage unless you installed an overdrive transmission.

can anyone tell me if the parts i have listed above would be a good combo for my 406? i think im going to go with a comp cam magnum hydraulic with 224/224 @ .05 and .470/.470 lift so i can keep my 3.08 highway gears. also would the turbo 350 be ok with a 406 or should i upgrade transmissions.

Depends on how fast you want to cruise on the highway, I normally cruise at about 75-80. With 4.10 gears that will be out of the question without an OD tranny.

If you just plan on doing 55-65 MPH 3.73 gears would be a good match up with 28 inch tires. Not to low not to tall

For a fun "daily driver" with the 3.08 gears,I would use the speed pro 12.5cc dish hypers,Scat crank,5.7 rods,72cc dart or RHS heads with 180-200 cc runners and an Isky 270 mega cam.
