Best cam for 350 sbc truck engine?

Looking for an inexpensive cam that would make good power in a 350 sbc with stock vortec heads, GM perf vortec intake and throttle body. Truck will be used to tow a racecar now and then, I might put a snow plow on it, and will also be used to haul mulch etc. Looking for something that will give pretty good low end torque but doesn't flatten out at 3k rpm.

1) Need to know year of the truck?

2) Year of the engine if it's different from the chassis?

3) Year of the block if it's different from the Vortec heads you reference those being 1996 and newer items for production?

4) Which transmission?

5) Does it need to smog?

There are a lot of changes year to year as to how the systems work and relate. Change difficulty is variable by year, and the cam is usually a large change, especially if when it comes to Manifold Absolute Pressure managed fuel injection. This can get expensive making system and computer chip changes, so it's necessary to have answers to the first questions to even get started.

Ok, teh truck is a 91 chevy pickup. the engine details will be:

350 4 bolt main 010 block. Not sure what years these were from. early 70s? or I have a 4 bolt 350 block from a 82 dumptruck either will be bored at least 30 over

stock crank cut .010
Probably stock rods
stock replacement cast flat top pistons
stock 062 vortec heads
Probably stock manifolds from the 91 truck
No smog in my area. Might keep a cat on it so the exhaust does not smell.
700R4 stock trans from the 91.

I`d use the Edelbrock performer plus or Summit racing equivilent cam. It`ll work just right for what your looking to do.

What do u know about the thumper cams a buddy of mine can't get over how they add so much hp

What I do know is this thread is 3 years old. I also know thumper cams are fad cams, all bark and no bite. They're designed to make a engine hit a heavy lope exhaust lick and sound good, they aren't so much on power development.
Other high performance cams lope at idle as well as long as the combo is tuned right.

Cam

You did not explain how much the truck weights and I don't know if you are in the trades and carry tools or anything like that.

I would look for a cam that would increase your low end because that is what most trucks need.

I have an 1986 Chevrolet Van that we put a 350 engine in and the motor was 30 over which makes it a 358ci and with the right Comp Cam it pulls hard and get the van full of tools up to speed fast.
